General Motors’ loss-making Swedish subsidiary Saab filed for bankruptcy on Friday after it was cut loose by the American company as part of its deep restructuring plan. Under the Swedish law, the reorganization is a self-managed process headed by an independent administrator appointed by the court who will work closely with Saab’s management team to present a proposal to creditors within three weeks of the filing. As Saab officials struggle to find a new owner for the troubled automaker to emerge from bankruptcy protection by June, the Swedish firm’s engineers are continuing the development of the all-new 9-5 executive sedan. The people at Saab are a bit kooky. I don’t mean in the old-fashioned “we’re building a quirky, turbo hatchback” kind of way. I mean “we’re selling restyled GM rubbish for BMW prices and expect you to buy it.” They think they can realistically charge over fifty-two thousand dollars for a front-wheel-drive convertible with 17-inch wheels. Following this drug-induced fantasy comes the latest, and most likely last, attempt by Saab to woo the buying public: the next-generation 9-5 executive sedan. Swedish car manufacturer Saab has announced the launch of a new Special Edition version of its 9-5 model for the UK market. Called the “9-5 Turbo Edition”, it features a number of added extras including 17 inch, five spoke alloy wheels, leather sport seats heated both front and rear, electric driver’s seat, and headlight washers. Saab will enhance its range in 2010 with the 9-1, a new entry-level model that will compete in the premium hatch segment against the BMW 1-Series and the Audi A3. Swedish car magazine “Teknikens Varld” hosted an interesting rendering of Saab’s forthcoming hatch that’s heavily inspired from the Aero-X concept. Logical. Since Saab was rather parsimonious with the official press kit including only a handful of front view pictures it was bound to happen again. Caught in a parking lot in Sweden by a reader of “forum.saabturboclub.com”, we get a better view of the sedan’s rear quarters with the crystal clear tail-lamps and the redesigned bumper.
