Breaking: SAAB files for Bankruptcy, aims to be Independent

General Motors’ loss-making Swedish subsidiary Saab filed for bankruptcy on Friday after it was cut loose by the American company as part of its deep restructuring plan. Under the Swedish law, the reorganization is a self-managed process headed by an independent administrator appointed by the court who will work closely with Saab’s management team to present a proposal to creditors within three weeks of the filing. During this period, Saab said that it will continue to operate “as usual and in accordance with the formal reorganization process, with the Government providing some support during this period”.

“We explored and will continue to explore all available options for funding and/or selling Saab and it was determined a formal reorganization would be the best way to create a truly independent entity that is ready for investment,” said Jan Ake Jonsson, Managing Director for Saab Automobile.

“With an all new 9-5, 9-3X and 9-4X all ready for launch over the next year and a half, Saab has an excellent foundation for strong growth, assuming we can get the funding to complete engineering, tooling and manage launch costs. Reorganization will give us the time and means that help get these products to market while minimizing the liquidity impact of Saab on GM,” Jonsson added.

Saab's Insignia-Based 9-5 Sedan Caught Testing on the 'Ring

As Saab officials struggle to find a new owner for the troubled automaker to emerge from bankruptcy protection by June, the Swedish firm’s engineers are continuing the development of the all-new 9-5 executive sedan. If all goes well, Saab’s flagship model should be revealed for the first time this autumn at the Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of its showroom debut in the first quarter of 2010.

The replacement for the 9-5 has been long overdue as the current model was introduced into the market back in 1997 – talk about GM’s commitment to Saab… The new 9-5 will use a modified version of the Opel Insignia’s Epsilon II platform featuring a longer wheelbase.

My Two Dents on the Forthcoming 2010 Saab 9-5

The people at Saab are a bit kooky. I don’t mean in the old-fashioned “we’re building a quirky, turbo hatchback” kind of way. I mean “we’re selling restyled GM rubbish for BMW prices and expect you to buy it.” They think they can realistically charge over fifty-two thousand dollars for a front-wheel-drive convertible with 17-inch wheels. Following this drug-induced fantasy comes the latest, and most likely last, attempt by Saab to woo the buying public: the next-generation 9-5 executive sedan.

Before we talk about the camouflaged mule, we need to understand the car it’s replacing. The current 9-5 is, put plainly, a rip-off. It’s outdated, poorly designed, and pathetically marketed.The “sport sedan” that was born from jets comes with a 2.3 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and front-wheel-drive and costs over forty thousand dollars. That’s enough to get a turbocharged 3-Series or a second-hand 5-er, which should be most peoples’ choice.

With an interior that features a Kia-inspired automatic shifter – or a circa-1988 manual gearshift – this car screams “don’t buy me”. I know nitpicking about shifters is a tad much (although I’ve done it before), but for that money you shouldn’t feel like you’re buying a time machine.

The Swedish edition of Automotorundsport magazine has published a photo of the forthcoming Saab 9-4x’s interior that was scooped virtually without any camouflage. Compared to the 9-4x concept that was previewed at the 2008 Detroit Show, the production model’s dashboard has remained relatively unchanged. Saab 9-5 Turbo Special Edition

Swedish car manufacturer Saab has announced the launch of a new Special Edition version of its 9-5 model for the UK market. Called the “9-5 Turbo Edition”, it features a number of added extras including 17 inch, five spoke alloy wheels, leather sport seats heated both front and rear, electric driver’s seat, and headlight washers.

There are two specifications available, the 9-5 Turbo Edition -offered with a choice of three engines: the entry-level 2.0t, the high power 2.3t and the 1.9 TiD diesel, and the top-of-the range 9-5 Aero Turbo Edition with a 260Hp 2.3-liter turbo engine that goes from 0-60mph in just 6.5 seconds. The Aero model features additional equipment including DVD satellite navigation and dual electric seats, as well as the traditional Aero features including performance brakes, Bi-xenon headlights, metallic paint and sport chassis.

2011 Buick Regal Pricing Announced, Starts from $26,995, Less Costly Version to Follow in 2011

General Motors has just released pricing for the new 2011 Buick Regal sedan, or if you prefer, the North American market version of the Opel Insignia. Initially, the Regal will be offered in a premium CXL trim with two engine options, a 182HP 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder with direct-injection and a 2.0-liter Ecotec turbocharged and direct injected four-pot rated at an estimated 220HP.

Prices have been set at $26,995 (that’s about €19,100 for our Euro friends) for the CXL 2.4L and $29,495 (€20,870) for the CXL 2.0L Turbo and include a $750 destination charge in both cases.

This means that the current-entry level Regal CXL 2.4L carries the same price tag as the larger 2010 LaCrosse CX 2.4L but is $3,400 cheaper than the equivalent CXL model.

Buick said that it will extend the Regal’s range with the addition of a less expensive CX model in the 2012 model year.

2010 Saab 9-1 Rendering – Hybrid Version To Be Included

Saab will enhance its range in 2010 with the 9-1, a new entry-level model that will compete in the premium hatch segment against the BMW 1-Series and the Audi A3. Swedish car magazine “Teknikens Varld” hosted an interesting rendering of Saab’s forthcoming hatch that’s heavily inspired from the Aero-X concept. While we can’t say for sure that the 9-1 will actually look like the car pictured here, we think that the Swede’s rendering gives a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Available in 5door and 3door versions, the 9-1 will be built on GM’s updated Delta platform sharing many components with the next generation Opel / Saturn Astra. Geneva Show: Saab 9-X BioHybrid Concept Previews BMW 1-Series Adversary

While Saab supports that the 9-X BioHybrid is a “vivid vision of what a future compact car from Saab could look like”, we’ll just bluntly say that the Geneva Show concept previews the shape of the forthcoming 9-1 premium hatch that will enter the market in 2010. The 9-X BioHybrid’s design is clearly inspired from Saab’s earlier Aero-X and 9X concept cars and although its rear-end sort of reminds us of a bread-van, overall, we like it. The interior looks like it came straight from a sci-fi movie, so there’s no point of making any comments as it will never find its way into production.

Underneath its sleek body, Saab’s concept hides a 1.4-liter BioPower turbo engine partnered by GM’s next-generation Hybrid system. The 1.4-liter engine generates 200 hp on E85 and an even more impressive 280 Nm (207 lb.ft) of torque. The new hybrid system features a lithium-ion battery and a significantly higher power capability to capture more energy and more electric boost than the current GM Hybrid system.

According to Saab, the 9-X BioHybrid can go from nought to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.9 sec on E85 and 8.3 sec when using regular gasoline. As for fuel consumption, the concepts need a mere 4.9 lt of gasoline or 6.4 lt of E85 for every 100 km (48 and 36.8 MPG respectively).

Caught in a parking lot in Sweden by a reader of “forum.saabturboclub.com”, we get a better view of the sedan’s rear quarters with the crystal clear tail-lamps and the redesigned bumper. New Kangoo Be Bop ZE Plug-In EV Previews Tech to be Used on 2010 Nissan and 2011 Renault EVs

2012 BMW M5 Sedan Realistically Rendered

A member of the F10 bimmer forums has put his photoshop talents to good use creating a series of realistic renderings of the upcoming 2012 (or 2011, depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on) BMW M5 Saloon.

Due to arrive in 2011, the Bavarian automaker’s new high-performance super saloon will be powered by a downsized, 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that was first used on the X5M and X6M.

In those two models, the V8 produces 555HP at 6,000 rpm and 680Nm or 501-lbs/ft of peak torque. However, it has been suggested that BMW’s M division may further tweak the twin-turbo engine boosting output closer to the 600HP mark.

New York 2010: Hyundai Equus debuts in U.S. production trim

Hyundai showed off its new Sonata Turbo and Sonata Hybrid yesterday at the New York Auto Show, two vehicles that should help keep the brand’s mid-size sedan moving up the sales charts with a bullet. With March sales figures just trickling in, it looks like the Sonata is now the third best-selling mid-size sedan behind the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. With its high level of equipment, style, quality and performance, it’s not surprising to see this Korean doing well. Today in New York, the automaker showed how it can take that level of refinement found in the Sonata and its bigger brother, the Genesis, and ratchet it up another notch for a new flagship, the Hyundai Equus.

The Equus actually showed up last year in New York, sent over in world-market form to gauge customer interest. Apparently, it went swimmingly for Hyundai, as the production Equus will officially go on sale here towards the end of the year – well an oxymoronically named Equus, minus its signature hood ornament. Looking slightly less like the Lexus LS460 than the previous version of the car we’d seen, the U.S.-spec Equus has a shape that fits right in with upscale sedans from Buick, Lexus and Infiniti, if not Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Particularly at the rear fender, there is a swoop that doesn’t quite speak luxury like the rest of the car though, reminding us more of a Dodge Charger than a Euro sedan. This production version though, particularly with its cleaner hood and grille, definitely has a refined look.
